How to Make a Homemade Pie Crust

Homemade Pie Crust | The Old Mill | Pigeon Forge, TN

Making a pie crust from scratch is not as hard as you might think! This basic recipe is simple to make. It's perfect for pies like apple, chess or pecan and it can be used in other desserts too!

The ingredients are: flour, salt, vegetable shortening, and ice water. We use our White Unbleached Flour. It’s our own high-quality Old Mill flour, but it is not bromated (bleached) to make it whiter. So it’s still white, but slightly less bright. Full of natural stone-ground goodness.

Be sure to share your success stories and pictures of the pies that you've made using our flour on social media! ( @theoldmilltn and #theoldmilltn ) And don't forget, if you're looking for a great dessert idea, be sure to check out all of our recipes here — we have something for everyone. Happy baking!

Instructions

  1. Place the flour and salt in a large bowl, & stir to combine.
  2. Cut the shortening into small pieces and distribute over the flour.
  3. Cut into the flour using a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture looks like coarse meal.
  4. Sprinkle water over the mixture and stir with a fork until the mixture holds together. If still crumbly, add a little more water.
  5. Form into a ball and place on a sheet of plastic wrap or waxed paper. Press down on the ball to flatten, wrap securely, and chill 1 hour.
  6. When ready to bake, place the dough on a lightly floured board and roll to 1/8-inch thickness. This fits into a 9-inch pan.
