Our Culture

Candy Kitchen Apples.jpg.jpg
  • We’re straightforward, uncomplicated, and unpretentious.

  • We’re comfortable with who we are and what we do.

  • We want others to feel as comfortable as we do, so we do our very best to ensure that everyone who comes into contact with us feels at home.

  • We enjoy the company of others and let them know that we are pleased to spend time with them.

  • The Old Mill is a place where the stress and tension of modern life can be set aside.

  • Appalachia’s traditions, crafts, and culture are essential to who we are, what we do, and how we move forward.

Employee Reviews

After 23 years I could write a novel about what I like about the Old Mill! When I first came to the Old Mill my job was keeping the books for the General Store. I could handle that position without any apprehensions, but when the Pottery property was bought it was a different story. I remember so well my conversation with Al, one of the owners. I told him I didn’t have a degree and only had 2 years of accounting in college and didn’t know if I was up to the task at hand. I’ll never forget his answer. “Tell you what…..you give it a try and if you see you can’t do the job we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.” It was an amazing opportunity I was given that day.

Not long after my conversation with Al, Ben, the other owner, showed up in the office one day. I didn’t know him very well at the time and didn’t know what to expect. I was working on an excel spreadsheet, self-taught I might add, and he was watching. He pulled up a chair and sat beside me and said, “Let me show you something.” He proceeded, over the next couple of hours, to show me short-cuts I didn’t know existed. After the training session, I thanked him and told him I felt inadequate for not knowing what he had taught me. His response was so kind and gentle, “How would you have known if no one has ever shown you.” In all the years I have worked here, even when the task before me was daunting, I was never once pressured by the owners to get the job done. These 2 examples of leadership opened up the door early on for me, and through the years I’ve been privileged to watch them open for so many others. What a wonderful place to spend my working years!

It is not a company, it is a family. I love the people here and the diversity.

I’ve been here 12 years and love the laid back atmosphere. When something happens with your family or outside of work, you don’t have to worry. You work with the same people forever.

- Kevin

I like the history of the company and it has aged very well. The people you need to get in touch with are accessible and issues are always addressed.

- Linda

I enjoy the opportunities to grow and explore other interests. It is also great to see how well everyone gets along across departments.

I grew up in Sevier county and with many of the people here so the Old Mill is special to me. It is a tight-knit family and I love the laid back atmosphere.
