Pottery Pumpkins: An Autumn Favorite

Each hand-shaped piece is perfect for dressing up your home for fall. For example, you could light up your front porch with an array of Jack-o’-Lanterns. Or add Pottery Pumpkins as a centerpiece in your fall table setting.

How Stingy Jack Inspired Jack-o’-Lanterns

When Irish immigrants came to East Tennessee in the 1700s, they brought with them the story of Stingy Jack.

Jack – a not-so-good guy – was doomed to roam for eternity, his travels lit only by an ember the devil gave him. On All Hallows’ Eve, the veil between life and death is thin. So, Irish youngsters carved a turnip and set an ember inside. Confused by the lights of lanterns much like his own, Stingy Jack steered clear. This kept the children safe on the spirit-filled night.

Once in America, the youngsters found pumpkins easier to carve than turnips. And that’s how Jack-o’-lanterns eventually became one of America’s most popular and beloved holiday traditions.
