Orange Buttermilk Chess Pie

IMG_0414CM3

A classic Southern custard pie with century-old roots, this pie was made with what was in the cook’s larder:  eggs, butter, milk, sugar, and cornmeal.  We like the sweet/sour orange flavor that our Old Mill Tropical Orange Dip Mix adds to the classic Southern custard pie.

1 3/4 cups sugar

3 tablespoons OLD MILL TROPICAL ORANGE DIP MIX

2 tablespoons OLD MILL PLAIN FLOUR

2 tablespoons OLD MILL PlAIN WHITE CORNMEAL

4 large eggs, lightly beaten

2/3 cup buttermilk (not nonfat)

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 (9-inch) unbaked pie crust

Place a baking sheet in the center of oven;  preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Whisk sugar, Old Mill Tropical Orange Dip Mix, Old Mill Plain Flour, and Old Mill Unbolted White Cornmeal in a large bowl;  whisk in buttermilk, butter, and vanilla. Pour into pie shell.

Place on hot baking sheet; bake until puffed and center barely jiggles when moved, 55 to 60 minutes. Cool completely before serving.

Note:  To make Tropical Orange Dip from the rest of the mix, blend with 2 (3-ounce) packages softened cream cheese and 2/3 cup sour cream as package directs.
